TARANAKI CHRISTMAS MEETING. • ACCEPTANCES TO-NIGHT, # Mr. E P. Webster should be an overworks man to-night, the closing night of acceptances for the Taranaki Jockey Quire Christmas meeting. Increased Wakes have supplied sufficient impetus to,Taranaki horse-owners to keep their horses in their own province on Boxing Day, and Mr. H. Coyle's weights leave no room for grumbling. Acceptances for aH events are but "an 'umble sov.," and "E. P." loves work, so rally up you owners and trainers and make this year's jffgures a record. The hour is 9p.m„ and the address P.O. Box 33. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Johnny Walker continues to exhibit excellent form on the track, and the fact that Benjamin Deeley will be in the saddle seems to have about clinched matters so far as the general public is concerned. Menelaus is also a likely starter in the Auckland Cup, and the Riddiford 'bracket" will see a very small "price" on the day. Still, races are never lest till they're won, and some horses (like Toatere) have the habit of returning good dividends. Without attempting to discount the deeds of Menelaus and Johnny Walker at Riccarton, there are many shrewd judges who aver that the best has not been seen of Toatere on a Maoriland racecourse, and for once "Moturoa" feels like saving up a few shekels for —but never mind what for! History tells us that Nanna cpt a very poor figure against Impediment in the N.Z. Oaka, receiving (according to one eeribe) quite a 141b beating, and in consequence, Handicapper Macmanemin is receiving many hard smacks on the wrist for placing Nanna within a couple of pounds of the Oaks victress at Ellerslie. The fact has been overlooked that Nanna han carried a'l before her of while Impediment nas done nothing, and experience teaches that an improving noddy (like Nanna) can make "figures'" look like the playthings of fools, and classic results not results at all. The Tnrf Register is cram full of inconsistencies., Quite the most amusing tit-bit on record is the denouement, in this week's 1 Press, of the apparently ''first hand" graphic account of the running of the Victoria St. Leger of 1897, supplier) by a writer who hides himself under the nom-de-plume of "Ex-Steward." There were three starters, and not only did "Ex-Stewafd" place the horses wrongly, which tumbled his alleged argument to pieces, but he also muddled the hotting, and actually, mounted one of the contestants with a jockey who had beeri dead and buried two years previously. Most people look askance at these reminiscences of old 'uns, and it is odds on that "Ex-Steward's'' next contribution to the Referee will ho well "halfsoled and heeled" by the sub-editors before it sees the light of day. The Manawalu Cup has filled well, seventeen being piad up for. They include recent winners like Square Deal, Devotion, and Nobleman, with the addition of proved stayers such as Client, Impediment, Rangitero, Sleight-of-Hand, etc. The other events also promise good sport. The Palmerston Stakes will see Acre, Lingerie, Birkenvale, Impediment, and Nystad measuring while promising 'horses in the minor heats include Mill Queen, Colorado, Endure, Bagdad, and Nobleman.
Starengo, and the hurdler Dasher Boy, are booked to race at New Plymouth and at Stratford this holiday season. Several local punters are alleged to have secured a l)ig deal about Toatere in the Auckland Cup, so there seems little chance of the crack racing in the province until the autumn meetings roll
