Alderman Joynton Smith, a Laborite nominee, has been elected Lord Mayor of Sydney, The. council, on the grounds of economy, and in view of the state of the council's finances and the finances of the country generally, has reduced the Lord Mayor's allowance from £ISOO to £IOOO. NEWSPAPER EDITOR PINED. Sydney, Dec. 10. H. E. Boote, editor of the newspaper Australian Worker, has been fined £25 on each of four counts for failing to submit for censorship articles relating to the war, before publication in The Worker. SYMPATHY OVER HALIFAX DISASTER. Melbourne, Dec. 10. Mr. Hughes has cabled to Sir R. Borden Australia's sympathy in connection with the Halifax disaster.
