BOWLING.

• ■■■ 1 _ I 'XKW PLYMOUTH WIN' THE RAXXRR. Two rinks from the Now Plymouth Club journeyed la I'ihama on .Saturday to play the latter for the Challenge Runner. On their Arrival they were mo>t heartily welcomed by tlie I'ihama president (Mr. Lauibie, senr.). The iveather was all that :oukl be desired and the green in perfect order. Xew Plymouth, after a most, enjoyable game, won by 30 points. The following' are the scores, Pihama players being mentioned first at each link: E. Lnmbic. Moore, Polie, Mason (3.) 14, v. Luseombe, J. R. Hill, X. Johnson, H. Smart (s) 30. Thornley, Riley, .Julian, Lambic (s.) 14, v. lleLcod, Morev, W. Smith, A. K. Smart (a.) 2S. Keen interest was taken in the rink games played at Stratford on Thursday, when the Inglewood and Eltham Chilis' had representatives on the green. Both contests had rather easy Wins, In"ljivood being severely handicapped in the opening stages. In justice to this club it should lie stated they were up against the best possible rinks the local club could put in, . There was a reason for this, as some of the Stratford players are easting eyes on other matches of more importance than club games. Sharp's four (Lyons, Foley, McMillan, and Sharp) had a Trig win against their rink and ,played their best throughout. This rink contemplates a visit to Dunedin early in. the new year. A rink which might aptly he termed the "Veteran Four''—Porritt, Masters, King, and 0. Smart—also totalled big figures against Wilson's rink. Constituting some of the oldest players in the club, their "brotherhood" extends over many seasons, and they are still going strong ff the quartette win at the New Plymouth tournament it will not be out of place, as, like Bruee's spider, they have been trying for many years' to reach the top hole of success. The next rink to be reviewed is that skipped by Bickerton, led by Campbell Jackson, the redoubtablo "Johnny" Bowo as second, and the silent J. S. McDonald as third man. Bicfcorton is the youngster of the team, but plays Ibowls above the average. Eltham had (inly two rinks, and at one period the boards showed level pegging in the matter of points. Carter (Eltham) was modest In his scoring, hein"content with a succession of * singles, whereas the veteran Curtis (Stratford) generally scored a 3 when the head was in his favor. Judd (Eltham) and Prentis (Stratford) had a good go. and no one begrudged the Eltham man a win in this rink, the only loss Stratford sustained. Inglewood were hopeless in the chase for points at the commencement. Bowls they sent down in the opening stages rolled short of kitty, whereas at their own rinks the same impetus would have carrier them to the gutter at the rear. Hater on they evened up matters very well. Wilson's rink had some hard knock* hy Smart, Probably the most interesting game was that skipped by Skoglund (Stratford) and A. Coldwcil (Inglewood). It was close throughout, and anvbody's came till the last bowl. , Coldwell saved his side on many occasions, and deserved the best thanks of his comrades for the eroat light hit put , up- to wrest the honors from Skughind, Leslie showed himself a "sport" bv holding nothing against the gi-ecn in minimising the defeat of his club. Later on in the season, when these clnbs meet at fngTewooil, the honip team hope to have their revenge, and ona oan quite hslloye tliev will do much better. "Keep on the mat" was not strictly ' observed on the Stratford green. Some bowlers were scrupulously fair In this connection, but others appeared to have little consideration for the rule, which f lifts created tome dismission at oxemtlvp - meeting
