'l'lie c'litertuinuiciii provided liy Hie llawcra amateurs, under control of Mr. lidwards, and given here last evening, proved a great umsieal success. Tlie piece chosen, ''P.cd Cap,'' was a very tuneful operetta, abounding in melodious choruses, neat marching, and catchy solos. The attendance was largo, and all thoroughly enjoyed the items presented.. At the close of the programme the Mayor thanked the performers for the artistic and pleasing evening, and his remarks were applauded to the echo. The Ladies' Patriotic Committee were the controlling factors in making the visit enjoyable to the Hawera visitors, ,who were hospitably entertained at the tearooms after the performance. The object of the entertainment—Red Cross funds—should receive a substantial lift. The committee are grateful to all who generously assisted by gifts o'f various kinds, thus keeping the expenses within reasonable bounds.

The Midhirst Town Hall also held a large audience last night, when a welcome home social was tendered Private T. J. Enwright, recently invalided.from the front. Mr. \V. Mount ford congratulated tlie soldier on his safe return and trusted he would soon enjoy his former good health. An illuminated address (the work of Mr. J. McAllister) was presenied to Private Emvright, wiio acknowledged the gift briefly, but feelingly. An enjoyable concert was given, sonc,v. etc., being contributed by Misses MHncr, P.o'wp, and lluse. and Messrs J. S. Rowo, R. .1. Peters. (!. T. Walters, and E. H. fJnnell. The entertainment was followed liv n'dance, which was also well nttended. and, despite the warm weather, keenly relished bv all. The bowlers used great discretion in the final -.inks to-day. There were few ••'burnt heads" in the closing stages, members keeping the clock steadily in view, and consequently there Were several off the ground* before the ''curfew hell" sounded (C> o'clock). Another young S*ratfordian U reported to have "gone west." Private S. F. Hancock, whose, parents reside in Juliet Street, being killed in action during October.
