SHORTAGE OF CARBIDE.
GREAT ECONOMY NECESSARY. By Telegraph.—'Press Association, Wellington, Dec. 5. The Hon. A .H. Myers stated to-day that there is an acute shortage of oarbide in the Dominion, and as the prospects of obtaining supplies from Rritain or Canada are small or non-existent, great economy is necessary. He pointed out the very severe restrictions now in force in Britain, cariiide being available only for very special purposes. 'He was taking action to secure supplies for the railway and military needs. It is understood that the Marine Department's immediate requirements are satisfactorily covered. The Hon. Myers added that a factory was being erected in Australia. He was, in communication with the Federal direction of munitions requesting information regarding the prospects pf sending supplies to Xew Zealand.
