Speaking at Toronto, Mr. Arthur Pollen, British naval expert, said he ».'Xpecl- ?<! before the war end? a naval battle of unimaginable violence would occur, wherein new engines of destruction would be used, resulting in the annihilation of the German Fleet and (lie partial annihilation of the British. Germany, if defeated on land, will attempt to' retrieve the situation on sea. THE APAPA TRAGEDY. FULtTHER HUN BRUTALITY. London, Dec, 5. The Apapa carried 120 passengers and a crew of 100, also mails. She was torpedoed when rieiiring Home, and commenced to sink directly the torpedo struck her. There were, enough lifeboats to save all, but the submarine, seeing women and children embarking, fired a second torpedo in order to sink the Apapa faster. Over SO perished, and about 120 were landed nt West Coast ports after great suffering. It is rumored that the submarine fired on women and children in the open boats. Those drowned apparently include Mr. Townsend. Attorney-General for the Gold Coast, and other well-known West African officials. Replying to a qucstipn in the House of Lords, Lord Lyttori denied that the naval escort was withdrawn when the Apapa was nearing the critical zone. He snid it was not'desirable to publish the arrangements for the protection of shipping.
