FITZROY SCHOOL FETE.
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The fctc organised by the committee of the Fitzroy school, and held in the school grounds yesterday afternoon, was in every way a most successful function. There was a large attendance,' and the support accorded the various stalls and competitions betokened a generous spirit on the part of the visitors. The usual annual exhibition was enlarged noon somewhat for this year's effort, committee decided in going in for the larger effort, to make a, charge for'admission and to divide the proceeds between the school funds and the Y.M.C.A. An attractive programme was well aafried out, and at the conclusion of th« proceedings the committee had the satisi faction of having raised a sum of be* tween £SO and £6O. The proceedings opened with the singi Ing of the National Anthem, after which the chairman of the committee, Mr. W. C. Reid, gave a short address. He apologised for the absence of the members of the Education Board, but later in the afternoon Mr. P. White, a. number ot the board, was present. The chairman also apologised for the absence of the mayor and mayoress. Tho \ following programme was then submitted by the school children: Marches and drill by the infants, under the direction of Miss physical drill, Standards I and 11, (boy*), under Miss Leech; wand drill, Sts. I, 11, and 111 (girls), under Miss Lawn; club drill, senior girls, under "Mis*' Tahne; -flag march, infants, under Miss Andrews; physical drill, seniors, under Mr. O. Johnson; poi dance, sts. IV, V, and VI (girls), under Miss Andrews. An exhibition of rescue and releaia work in connection with life-saving was given by Mr. Walker. A tug-of-war. between teams from the Central arid TFHttoy schools was won by the Central team. During an interval between the items Corporal Oldham, a, returned! Ansae, who is on a visit to New" Plymouth from Auckland, gave a short acconht oflits experiences at the front, and told something of the work of the' V.M.C.A. amongst the soldiers. He also exhibited a number of war trophies.. ' Various competitions were conducted, both for. children and adults, and all added their quota to tho general fund. An animal race for children was won by Allan Cropper (dog), Te Rata Day, who negotiated a calf, being second. Following are the names of the stallProduce, Mesdames Chiltirstone, Andrews, D. Cox, and Miss Colson. Garments, Mesdames Jones, Huggard, and Ardern. Sweets, Misses V. Bcllringer and I. Hooper. Afternoon tea, Mesdftme* Aroa, Old, Reid, Pepperlll. Grayling, and Miss Colson. Mesdames McDougail, Day, Jerildn, Parkin, and Bellrlngor, were' hi charge of the competitions, and Masters C. Grayling, G. Grover, X Huggard, and I. Peppenll managed the bran tubs. The goods remaining at the end were satisfactorily disposed of by Mr. Reid. Throughout the afternoon Mrs. Moverley's orchestra played a programme of very enjoyable selection*.
