THE ONE TOUCH OF MADNESS.
To the Editor. Sir, —The daily lip. "Never again,'' the legacy of our forefathers, the promise of leaders, the cry and dream of the millions and the precept of the few. Now that the great nations of the earth are locked in death grips, the old worldworn cry rings louder than ever. Man hears it from the lips of his mother and repeats it at her dictation: then to himself after his first cigarette, when he is married, and on through his life, as the last hours of the old year fade away and the dawn of the new is breaking, filled with fresh hopes and resolution, he look's hack and murmurs ''never again." When at last the grim reaper is near, the remaining hours slip by, the lips so soon to be stilled for ever, ask of his Creator the chance once again to redeem his promise of childhood. The farewell scene is the open prove, and as the first "lods strike the coffin the familiar "ashes to ashes, dust to dust'' is heard. Then w ; th truth can be said ''never again." The trying to delude ourselves that it can ever be otherwise must he the one touch of madness that makes the whole world kin.—l am. tc., T.ENOWX.
