Mansfield, of Port Dawin, Australia, has been appointed t<Wrn clerk and borough treasurer to the Blenheim Borough Council. Mr. Robert Triggs has been appointed a member of the Teachers' Superannuation Board, in place of Dr. F. Fitchett, who recently resigned. ,' A London official message states that General Plummer has been appoint*! to the command of the .British forcer in Italy, and Lieutenarit-General W. R. Marshall to the command of the forces in Mesopotamia. Mr. P. D. Pajrnc received advice on Saturday that his son, Trooper Payne, was killed in Palestine on November 14. Trooper Payne joined the forces from the Waikato when ho was only 17 yeira of age, and went away with the Fonrth Reinforcements. He was just 20 when he was killed, ' • '
A very pleasing little function took place on Friday evening (says the W»nganui Chronicle), when Mr. J. B. Armstrong, district traffic manager of .Milways at Wanganui, who is retiring after 47 years' service, was unofficially entertained at dinner by the heads of the Railway Department. .There were present: Messrs E. H. Hiley (general manager of railways), F. W. McLean (chief engineer), H. H. Jackson (chief mechanical engineer), and- H. Buxton (chief traffic manager), together with the local district officers. Eulogistic reference was mado to Mr. Armstrong's long- airdefficient services with the Department, and regret was expressed at hie approaehinfr retirement. ;; ;
Hawera is (says the Star) ahorti* to suffer a loss by the removal of Mr. E. B. Bates, who lias decided to remove to Howick, Auckland. For some years Mr. Bates has devoted some of his leisure to public service as a member of the Ho»pital and Charitable Aid Board, and more lately as a member of the Borough Cotfnv cil. He has done a great deal of work in connection with tho Bed Cross aniil fit, John Ambulance activities, and for iaine months gave personal service at a nilli* tary. camp, and, in fact, has been a Wwy man in public service. The Anglican Church in Hawera will lose a most ac- J the worker. Ho has served faithfully in many capacities, and at present is church warden and is representative of the district in synod. Tho Bawdra Boiling Club will lose a valued member, as for several years he has held the office of vice-president, and took a keen in&rest in the success of ttie club.
