APARIMA TORPEDOED.

IX ENGLISH CHANNEL. SINKS IN FIVE MINUTES Wellington, Nov. 23. Mr. Massey has been advised that the Union Company's Aparima (5704 tons) has been torpedoed in the English Channel. There was a .severe explosion and she sank in five minutes. Rome loss of life is feared. Tlie vessel was hound from London to New York. FURTHER DETAILS. LTST OF THE SAVED. The Prime Minister has received the following eaWe from London this morning:— Regret to advise that the Aparima was torpedoed in the English Channel and sank in five minutes. The following were safely landed: Captain Doorlv. Third officer Cooper. Wireless operator Yipan. Boatswain Johnson. Seamen Melntyre, Fox, Dwyer, McKinnon. Cadets Annandale, Clayton, Scantelhury, David Williams, Sutherland, Mur ray. Bevan, Denholm, Adams, Davis, Shakespeare, MiUward. Second Engineer W. B. Hirst. Third Engineer K. A. ■ Gunn. Fourth Engineer H, H. Barrs. Fifth Engineer X. S. Fleming. •Sixth Engineer J. .T. McKegan. Seventh Engineer H. M. Mays. Thirty-one La sears were also saved, and as all the 'boats are accounted for in i the eable it is feared there is little hope for any further survivors. The ship was struck aft, and the explosion was so severe that it is believed it was accountable for tho majority of the casualties. There have been no changes in the personnel of the crew since the vessel left Auckland. There is no record of the entire crew in Wellington. The directors of the Union Company desire to express deep sympathy with the relatives of the officers, cadets, and crew who lost their lives by the act of the enemy. The Aparima was taken over by the British Admiralty some time ago. 58 OF CREW MISSING, Wellington. Last Night. The Union Company states that the crew of the Aparima. when she left New Zealand, consisted of the master. 4 officers, 7 engineers. 30 cadets, 2 wireless operators, 7 able seamen, 3 stewards, and, in addition, she carried 2 Chinese and 2 Lascars on deck. 41 Lascars in the stokehold, and l(i Lascars as stewards, a grand total of 115- Of these 26 Europeans and 31 Lascars were saved, leaving 2S Europeans and 30 Lascars :nissing. The Premier has made the following statement regarding the Anariina: There were no passengers or troops on hoard. We feel that as the relatives are already being communicated with, and the news oi tho sinWng of the vessel has been made known, and as statements that all hands had been lost are already in circulation, it is better to publish the facts.
