Secrotary Tile 'first presentation was made to the baby by Mr. J. JHn.jr,.Cliiei F.ngineev of the works.' In a few well chosen and apropos : words. M.r. Blair rofered to the good 'work done by the Committee in the recent contest, to the assistance of the firlrii of Meters, Bortllwick & Sons, to the untiring" energy : »{ tlie ladies and the' incessant, work of the Secretary. .The speaker said he was sure their succes was due to the co-ordination of the members of the committee and the unanimous desire to pull together. He wished the recipient long life and said no doubt as the years rolled by h c would look back on the days when ho was the little fellow of to-day witli some degree of pride. Hc then handed Baby Allen a handsome gold medal suitably inscribed.
His Worship the Mayor, Mr. R. Morgan, was called \ißon to__mnkc an acknowledgment of the Secretary's work, .and in doing so, said he had known Mr. Percy Allen since he was a very small boy. lie had known his father before him and he .could justly say they were both honorable men, deserving of the' best wishes of their friends. He had every hope that the young Allen just presented with a medal, would foilow in the. footsteps.of. his father and grandfather. On behalf of the committee he then asked Mr. Allen to accept a gold mounted fountain pen as a small momento of the work done by him in connection with the contest. '
In reply, Mr. Allen thanked the men of the works for th? very-able assistance and whole-hearted manner in which they had carried out the onerous work in connection with/the contest. They should feel proud of their efforts, but must remember that it is all for the boys at the front, and they deserve all that can be done for them'. This was not their "final flutter" by any means. He again thanked them'heartily for their presents to his son and himself, both of whim would treasure them through life.

During (he social tendered to Mr. Allen on Monday night it was decided by the Freezers' Committee to continue their efforts as a body for patriot ie purposes, and it was arrflnsed that the first of these should take place on Saturday week n-xt, taking the form of. those that were run • by them during the baby contest. . The proceeds are to be evenly divided between the Wounded Soldiers' Y.\m\ and. the Solvation Army Fund." Most people willbe glad. fo<' see this combination back in the field as they certainly 'enlivened Saturday nights, and as the occasion on which they propose to start is the first night on which six o'clock closing will come into force, it will probably help to pass to some what otherwise would be a dull evenlne. The scheme
will be carried out an a monthly function. The final meeting of the Labour ttyy fiala Committee was lie Id on Tnesdjty evening for the allocation of the funds in connection with the baby contest (so far as the results affected Waitara) and the sports day takings.
