The monthly meeting of the sc' --.1 committee was V "H last evening. Present: Messrs Boon (chairman), Smart, Martin, Sanderson, Robinson, Lawn, Pintev. F.'J. and W. McDonald.

The headmaster's report showed that Ihe school was making very satisfactory progress The attendance at the primary schools wa; over 600 and increasing, and consequently there was an overcrowding. Tn this connection, he stated that it was intended by the board to purchase another site for the new secondary school buildings, and lis iiopcd this would soon be fixed on. T:i the meantime he hoped the committee would be able to secure other quarter? for the secondary schools after the holidays, and if this was done there would he room for the primary scholars. The chairman thong-lit the headmaster and teachers should he congratulated on their work. The overcrowding was. recognised, and the hope expressed that the pressure would be relieved in the near future. The annual school concert is to be held in Dec-ruber. and it was decided to secure the Town TTall for the 0.-cision. Other routine business wos translated, accounts pas=ed for payment, and the meeting adjourned. SECTARIAN STRIFE. At lust Monday's- Rorough Council meeting, a lively and prolonged discussion took place on the refusal of the louneil to let the Town Hall to the Protestant Political Association, the debate bein" due to a letter from the W.0.T.1-. Cr. ifalone. after criticising the action of the W.C.T.U. moved: "That this council regrets that the W C.T.U. should i have passed a hostile resolution, condemning councillors for refusing to Drant the use of the Town Hall to an objectionable person, whose chief object ap- | pears to be to attempt to create bitter sectarian strife.—Seconded by the May-

Cr. Thompson moved, as an amendment, that the letter be received. Eventually the amendment was carried, the voting being: For. Cr*. McDonald. Walsh, Hunter, Jackson. Thompson and. Masters; against, the Mayor, Crs. Malone and Lawson. GENERAL. Mr. E. Ililey, railway commissioner, and Messrs Buxton, Armstrong', Jackson, Koch and Rrownley, of the Railway Department, arrived here by special train (his morning. They left soon after to inspect the line beyond Whansaniomonn, where it is intended to take the Kohuratahi length from the Public Works Department shortly.

The Toko School Committee is holding a concert and dance on Thursday evening, in aid of school funds. The first portion will he by the children, and then the balance by adults. Riileumn l.eydon will also be tendered a farewell the same evening. The first meeting of the Stratford blanch of the Women's National Reserve was held in the Forestgrs' Hull yesterday afternoon. Mrs. McMillan (president) received the mothers of boys at Uie front, and other visitors. The Mayor was also present, and in a few wellchosen words expressed his pleasure at seeing so many present, and trusted the reserve would hold many similar functions, which, served the admirable purpose of showing sympathy and considernt.ion to those who had relatives at Hie front. A short musical programme was submittal, items being contributed by Misses E. gangster and Kimbell, whilst, iho lino cabinet gramaphonc of Mr McMillan'* was also available. Afternoon lea was served, the afternoon passing most pleasantly.

Those who are in a quandary will be pleased to hear that Mr. C. E. James has opened up one of the best, consignments of Christmas cards and goods ever imported to Tavanaki.
