INGLEWOOD.
(From Our Travelling Reporter). Inglewood, Nov. 19. ' A man named Jas. Smith arrested at Ngacrc road, Tariki, on the 13th instant, by Constable Lang, whilst working on Mr. Gladdey's farm. Smith was charged with being a deserter, having been drawn in the first, ballot some months back. He was handed over to the military authorities at Hawera, Barton's Cii'cus showed here on Saturday. The entertainment attracted much attention, principally by the rising generation, who greatly appreciate anything in the horse-riding or bucking line. The Lawn Tennis Club here has a strong membership. Mr. Ja# Sutherland is president, and has at the back of him an enthusiastic committee and a harmonious club. Recently the writer visited the club's grounds, ahd was agreeably surprised to note the large attendance. The club is handicapped in only having two courts, but efforts will be made to effect further improvements that will permit of another court being added. Lack of courts has one advantage, in that the club has always someone on the ground, the asphalt being rarely idle on Thursdays and Saturdays. Alongside tho tennis iawn is a perfect croquet green, and it was plainly evident that some of the ladies behind the mallet were experts at the game. It may be added that although the membership is in the negihborhood of 70 there were no eligible First Division men. Mrs. Sutherland also takes a great interest in the club. From appearance, Inglewood tennis should thrive, as the membership is large and enthusiasm highest, two factors that should ensure success in any club.
