TARANAKI BISHOPRIC.

To the Editor. Sir,—As reported in your issue of Wednesday last the church people of Taranaki have now definitely settled that the time is opportune for raising an endowment fund for creating the new diocese of Taranaki, and a boid effort is to he made to raise the sum of £'25,000 at once, in order that this may be done. An organising secretary is to be appointed who will provide for the spreading of the burden as widely as possible, and the general management of the fund will tie in the hands of a representative committee; the fund itself will be vested in four lay trustees. Jn order that Die appeal may meet with a hearty response from all church people, it is essential that it should have a snort start, and £25,000 is a large sum to raise unless a good lead is given by those who are in a position to do so. There are many people in Taranaki who could give £SOO or £i'ooo without feeling it, and it is to them, more particularly, that we now make this fh'3t appeal for substantial contributions, in order that others who cannot give so much may he inspired by the example and self-sacrifice of their wealthier brethren. We hope and believe that the desire for the progress of the church is deep enlftigh in the hearts of Taranaki church people to move them to give their best to this fund, and we are optimistic enough to hope that the fund can be raised and the new diocese formed in time to be a fitting commer- ! oration of the declaration of peace. What more noble monument could we raise than to mark that glad day by endowing the diocese of Taranaki for all time? Subscriptions may be ?cnt to either of us, who are acting as temporary treasures of the endowment fund—We are, etc.,

F. G. EVANS, Archdeacon, "Tirohanga," New Plymouth. F. G. HARVIE, fit. Mary's Vicarage, New Plymouth.
