MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the New Plymouth brunch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held yesterday afternoon, when there were present: Mr. T. G. Hirst (presiding), Mrs. Martin, Miss Banwell, Messrs J. Paton, E. Lash, F. W. Sandford, and R. C. Hughes. Apologies were received from Miss Curtis and Rev. XV. A. Sinclair. ESSAY COMPETITIONS. The essay competitions inaugurated by the association were judged by Messrs S. Percy Smith and G. F. Kobinson, who made the following awards: —Standard I: Melville Pepper (West End School) 1, Fay Wright (Central School) 2. Standard II: B. Sole (Central) 1, Eadic Barclay (Central) 2, Standard III: Phyllis Matthews (West End) 1, Violet 'Hunt (West End) 2. Standard IV: Ethel Foreman (Central) 1, Jean Ramson (ftiris' High) 2. Standard V: V. Hnrle (West End) 1, V. Harker (Central) 2. Standard VI: Laurie Davies (Central) 1, Ruby Sole (West End) 2. High School Secondary: Flora Cameron 1, Nelly Lnkashcfski 2.' ,

Tlio judges reported that 118 essays had been judged, and the most interesting were written by the pupils of Standards 3 and 4, A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the judges. The prizes, which were selected by Messrs Banwell, Wilson, and Bnrr, were received. It was decided that the prizes should be presented at the annual brnr.kiu.g-up ceremonies at the various schools, and that a sub-committee consisting of Messrs Hirst. Hughes,' and Sandford should arrange for the delivering of suitable explanatory addresses. GENERAL. The inspector (Mr. Collins) reported that he had made inquiries into a complaint laid last month again=.t the owner of an express horse which was said to be in a bad stnte, but found that the horse in question had been taken out of express running and put on lighter work in a cab. The drinking trough at Moturoa had been thoroughly cleaned. He had attended cattle sales in all parts of the district and found conditions quite satisfactory. No complaints were received during the month. Miss Frances Lcovey. of Waverley, ami formerly secretary to the Bands of Mere? of New South Wales, wrote congratulating Ihe association on the excellent report of tin; last year's work. Accounts amounting to £-2 Ss were passed for payment.
