ARBITRATION COURT.

NEW (PLYMOUTH SITTING. The Arbitration Court sat at New Plymouth Courthouse yesterday, Mr. Justice Stringer presiding. There were also on the Bench Mr. W. Scott (vepre. senting the employers) and Mr, J. M'Culloch (representing the employees). TYPOGRAPHICAL AWARD, The New Zealand Federated Typographical Association of Workers applied to have seven persons added to the New Zealand typographers' award. An order was made adding the parties cited. SLAUGHTERMEN'S AWARDS. Application was made to extend the Masterton slaughtermen's award to Thos. Borthwick and Sons, Waitara, and the Taranaki Farmers' Meat Company, Ltd., Fitzroy, Mr. Reardon represented the Slaughtermen's Association, Mr. J. H. Quilliam appeared for the Taranaki Farmers' Meat Company, and Mr. H. R. Billing for Borthwick and Sons.

Mr. Quilliam intimated that his com. pany consented to being bound. The Waitara slaughtermen objected on the ground that they had tlieiir own union and were working under their own award. Mr. Reardon contended that the Waitara Union was no longer in existence on the ground that the annual returns required by tljie Act had not been sent in, but the court assumed that until the union was cancelled' bv notice in the Gazette it must be held to be still in existence.

H. A. Bowen was called, and deposed that the Waitara Union was still in existence and was objecting to the extension of the award.

The secretary, Clifton Cole, appenreil and replied to the judge that he hnd not sent in the annual returns, as he only became secretary to the union on March 12 this year and was unable to get a meeting of the members. He aave evidence concerninc- certain roeetinas. and concluded that the members of the union to which lie belonged were working under the Waitara slaughtermen's n?rc?ment, which was in full force and effect. The chairman said that Mr. Heardon must get rid of (his union before he could extend the other agreement. Mr. "Reardon asked if the court pronosed to extend the agreement only to the Taranaki Farmers' Meat Company, Ltd.. which had signified its consent. ' The court intimated that thev would look into the matter and, if they had power, would do so. Mr. Reardon explained that the men workimr at the works at Fituroy had come from Masterton on condition that they should continue work under the same award. An agreement in accordance was made with the company and it was now desired to have an award and the application to extend the Masterton award was therefore made.

CARPENTERS AND JOINERS. In the Taranald carpenters' and joiners' dispute, which was before the Conciliation Court in July without an* agreement being reached. Mr. W. F. Brooking appeared for the employers and Mr. T. Bloodworth for the union. Mr. Bloodworth said that since the sitting of the Conciliation Council there had been further meetings and correspondence and now the dispute was practically a settled one. on the basis of the Wanganui award. He detailed the amendments desired in the. various clauses. Tt was desired that the award should be retrospective in regard to the war bonus. Mr. Brooking opposed- the request for the award to be retrospective. The court decided to take time to consider its decision, TARANAKI TAILORS' DISPUTE. The court has 1 , also to deal with the Taranaki tailoring dispute, in which it, was decided at the sitting of the Conciliation Council last week to accept an award Which will be practically a Dominion award.
