STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent). [All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. 11. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] COUNTY ELECTIONS. Strafford, Nov. 13, To-morrow (Wednesday) the county elections are being held. In two of the five ridings the sitting members, Crs. Were and Walter (East) and Worthington (Mangaehu) are returned unopposed. They have all proved useful members, and would have been difficult men to head at the poll. In the South Riding there are three candidates for the two feats. The retiring councillors are Messrs ChristofTel and Coleman, and the new candidate is Mr. .1. O'Neill. In the West Hiding Crs. Smith and Anderson are opposed bv Mr. Hancock. In the North 'Riding there are four candidates for the two seats, it being understood that Mr. F. Mackay stands with the chairman (Cr. Hathaway), and Mr. Rutledge with Cr. Baskin. Cr. Hathaway has had a strenuous time looking after the county's interests, and thoroughly earned the high praise voiced by Cr. Walter. The county clerk, Mr. C. Penn, was busy yesterday arranging details in connection with the various polling booths. GENERAL. An occurrence that looks more mysterious than serious is reported from ficaconsfield road. It appears that on returning from Stratford late on Saturday night Mrs. H. Richmond found the premises full of smoke and a hole burned through the linoleum and the flooring. There had been no fire on the premises, Mrs. Richmond leaving the homestead about <i p.m., and at that time everything appeared perfectly safe and the fire in the range apparently out for some hours. Chatting to a Waimate Plains farmer, lie informs me that although the spring was one of the best there for 30 years the cattle have suddenly gone down in their milk supply.

A number of people are now* exercising their minds as to what to send to absent friends. Their dilemma will soon be a thing of the past if they call at Mr, C. E. James' jewellery warehouse and note the fine Christmas cards, greetings, etc., he has for sale. The shelves are also crowded with those little trinkets so dear to the feminine minds. Now,, young men, don't forget the ladies. Ladies, don't forget absent faces.
