MALE CHOIR'S GRAND CONCERT.

At the forthcoming grand concert, to bo given by the New Plymouth Male Choir the numbers to he -rendered by the assisting .'artistes will constitute a rare musical treat in themselves. Mrs. C. Hughes Johnson, of Wanganui (probably better known to musical enthusiasts as Miss fTatherley), will contribute harp solos, with piano and violin accompaniments. There is little doubt that the novelty will be much appreciated. TJtfc Rev, X. IT. .Papakaknra's reappearance after his success at the society's opening concert in Aniust last will be welcomed by music lovers. Mr. Arnold 0. Sturrock", in addition to carrying out the duties of accompanist, will render pianoforte solos. The choir items will include a rather pretentious chorus, entitled, "The Voice of the Torrent," containing bright, florid passages for the {first and second basses particularly. This should prove a fine item. Another number, "Merry May" (Franz Abt), is a part song already well known to devotees of vocal music as a delightful number. "Tho Banks of Allan Water" (Elliott Burton) is an old favorite that is always welcome. Other numbers are an amusing part song, "Alexander" (Brewer), a rousing chorus, "Comrades; We March" I (Kuch.cn), and another composition by the same writer, "To the Stars." Two Iquartctfo parties will probably contribute items, •bo that altogether the concert should be a most enjoyable one. The hymns, "Lead Kindly Light" and "Abide With Me," will be included in the programme. The work of preparation has been carried out steadily, and tho practices have, been entered into with enthusiasm by the members of the choir. It has been the aim of the choirmaster, Mr. F. W. G. McLeod, to make the practices as sociable as possible, and members are, each practice evening, invited to give items of their own choosing. Short lectures on voice production and matters pertaining to vocal music are delivered, and the valuahle assistance given in this manner has proved very helpful. The box plan opened yesterday morning at Hoffman's.
