ROSE DAY AT THE MART.
OVER '£lso TAfcEH. GREAT METHODIST EFFORT. _ Aa the result of yesterday's organise* tion on the part of the Methodists, the patriotic and Red Cross funds benefit to the extent of at least £l6O. This, for an ordinary mart day, must be looked upon as very satisfactory, especially when we realise that this amount was raised by straight-out purchases, there being no raffles or competitions introduced, and it is quite evident that the public arc prepared to help forward patriotic objects without the speculative element which is often associated with these movements. The show of rosea .was greatly admired, some veiy fine specimens having been presented by noted growers, and the flower committee had a very pleasant day in disposing of the blooms, which were eagerly Sought for. Madame Edouard Heriot, though eome-i what shy, was much in evidence. We understand that the Whitaley folk had made arrangements for running a rose show in aid of their church funds, but when the request came to take up a day nt the mart the idea was dropped with a view to benefiting patriotic funds, which claimed first attention. The various committees, which had been well organised, worked well. The country assistants were very enthusiastic, whilst those in charge of the stalls in town all worked to make the day's takings worthy of the cause. Many of the stallholders had disposed of their wares early in the afternoon. The rose bower, in which was served ice creams, etc., was kept open in the evening, and did good business.
