ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondeni). jßlthani. Nov. 10. It is, perhaps, hardly surprising (Kit the people of Kltliam and district should view with concern the drawing lip for military service of Dr. H. This is hnrdlv desrinble, and, in consequence, something i-t the T<l tine of protest meetings have ;i 1 - ready ben held. Last night the Borough Council held a special inching to (-insider the qik.;(ion, and passed a resolution supporting any movement for the retention rf tlie services of Dr. Cooper. At to-day's meet in,- of the Coi-"',y Council the same subject was discussed rather fully, and a motion similar 1) that of the Borough Coui.,:il was also carried. The friendly, societies : also exercised over the matter, and Mr. (4. D. (iow was elected chairman of a representative meeting of DruWs, Hibernians, Oddfellows and Foresters. The '—>eting had a full and free discussion regarding the position in the event of Dr. Cooper b»ing excepted for war service. The following resolutions were carried:

"That this meeting of delegates of friendly societies appeals to the Military Service Hoard that the calling up of Dr. Cooper is contrary to public interest. He is the only medical practitioner in Eltham district, svith a population of 5000; that, no other medical man lives nearer than! Stratford (7 miles), Kaponga (10 miles), Hawera (12 miles); also that he acts as anaesthetist to Stratford Hospital, and at all major operations in Hawera, also, when necessary, at Eltham, Kaponga and Opunake; that the Eltham Borough and County Councils be approached to support the appeal, also the W.C.T.U.; that the Inspector-General of Hospitals, and Minister of Public Health •be requested to support the appeal; that the Minister of Defence be communicated with on the same matter; that the various benefit societies pass resolutions supporting the appeal, and arrange for a witness to give evidence at the Appeal Board. They play an important part in its development; they contribute to its wealth and give employment to its people. New Zealand is fortunate in the possession of many flourishing industries. A comparatively recent addition to the list is Gold Poiu.h tobaffo for pipe and Three Diamonds for cigarette?, two brands which apparently are destined to make Hawke's Bay industrially famous. This is the first New Zealand grown, cured and manufactured tobacco to command a wide sale all ever the Dominion.* Its leading points are: Purity, distinctive flavor and distinctive aroma, mildness and small percentage of nicotine, which makes it a healthy smoke and. last but not least the perfect combustibility and absence of "bite." No wonder that Gold Pouch would appeal to the smoker who has been longing for a change. And the price is another consideration ; you get 30 per cent, better value for your money. Is not that) alone sufficient inducement to patronise your country's industries? 2b SHOCK. Dear Blanche, when the quakes came I fainted, Ma screamed, Maud went into hysterics and Pa rusjied into the street shouting "Fire!" But a cup of ARCADIA TEA soon soothed us all. When we returned to bed, it was to dream the same dream—it was of ARCADIA.
