FIRE AT BIRD ROAD. Stratford, Nov. 9. A small cottage occupied by Mr. Howard Bayly was totally destroyed by fire last evening, the outbreak being discovered a little after six o'clock. From what can be gathered, Mrs. Baylv and the children went' to Stratford 30' minutes or so earlier, leaving a lire going* to keep the meals of.the male members «arm. An employee named Brnnsden first- detected the outbreak whilst in the milking shed, but by the time he and Mr. Bayly (who had not finished milking and had to stop the machinery} arrived the fire had a good hold. The near neighbor? came across, but nothing could be don l .', the house and contents being practically putted. Much sympathy has been expressed with tlie family and assistant, as the only thing#., saved were the clothes they were wearing.
OUR MEMBER. WOUNDED. The news that the.member for this electorate. Captain .T. B. Hine, had been dangerously wounded in the chest bv gunshot, in the recent fighting in ralestine, came as a great shock. Captain Hine has been at the front over twelve months, 'having left with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade.. He was for some time in Egypt, and thence moved on •with his forces to the present locality. There are a host of readers who will hope that Captain Iline will make a speedy recovery, and be permitted to return to his family and friends and take up less warlike duties. j
A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. At the executive meeting last evening tile Stratford Band's tender for playing on the second day at the show was accepted. Messrs Brown and Dingle were appointed a deputation to interview Mr. Peattie, statiomnaster, and also Mr. Armstrong, traffic manager, Wanganui, regarding excursion trains. The suggestions of the sergeant of police regard in" permits to side show visitors were adopted. Mr. C. Jackson reported that the canvass for entries at Palmerston North end in this district had proved most satisfactory. The president and secretary were instructed to visit Wanganui show next week for a similar purpose. The secretary notified that the general entries received were very favorable. The following new members were elected: Messrs W. H. Kerr, -T. Richards, C. McLaren, T. IT. Bredin, E. A. Algar. .1. Pierce, iand Mrs. A. Walker. Those interested in (he hut<or-fut competition are reminded that entries close tomorrow (Saturday).

The election will be held oil Wednesday, but it Is not expected the results will be known till some time on Thursday.
GENERAL". A Stratford visitor to the Xew Plymouth Higli School sports yesterday speaks in high praise of the conduct of the lads and the supervision of Mr. Moyes. In the various contest* tlio precision with which each heat was despatched was an eye-opener, whilst the cheerful manner in which the vanquished took their defeat and the winners the honor was a treat to all spectators. He thought that, if secretaries of athletic bodies could have attended
a meeting of this description it would |Svo them an excellent idea of how a sports meeting should be conducted. He was particularly impressed with Mr. Stoves, and thinks that gentleman an ideal man for organising these gather- 1

The nominations for the Whungamomona Council show that Crs. J. McCluggage and O'Neill (Strathmore) are not seeking re-election. Crs. Cleland, McLeod, and Pitcaithlev are returned unopposed. Mr. A. Coxhead opposes Crs, MeCutchan (chairman) and S. Griever in the Central ®iding, whilst for the Strathmore Riding (3) Messrs Rentoul, Nolan, and Finnerty are out against Crs. Coyne and Mounsey.
