ANNUAL SPORTS.

NEW PLYMOUTH HIGH SCHOOL. • A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION.

Beautiful weather conditions prevailed yesterday for the annual athletic sports of the New Plymouth High School, held on the school ground, and consequently there was a large attendance of parents and friends of the, scholars, parents being present from as far as Uruti in the north, Patea in the south and Opunake in the west, every part of Taranaki, indeed, being represented. The sports again proved thoroughly successful and enjoyable. The organisation was again splendid, everything working with military precision, the running of a programme of 47 events, some of which contained no fewer than twelve heats, which would have been a formidable task for even a provincial sports club to have got through in three days, being carried through without a hitch in less than five hours. As soon as one heat reached the tapes another was despatched. There was not one dull moment during the day. The boys, as usual, entered with zest into the various competitions, and there was a healthy rivalry and keenness to ejjeel that speaks well for the future ot the school. The perfect harmony existing between the boys and the masters was also in evidence. The events were all keenly contested, the finishes being very close, a tribute to the work of the handicapping committee. Rome good performances were put up, though very few records were broken, the only records being in the junior high jump, the 75 yards under 10, and the 100 yards under 12. There was a very large attendance during the afternoon, among those present being Colonel Sir James Allen, Bishop Averill. Archdeacon F-vans. Lieut. Colonel McDonald, G. 5.0., Captain Rockshow, Lieut. Crutch. Messrs 0. H. Burgess (Mayor of New Plymouth). H. J. Okey, M.P., and R. Masters (chairman of the Board of Education). A feature of'the afternoon was the first appearance of the High School Brass Band, which, under the baton of Mr. F. W. G. McLeod, enlivened the proceedings with musical selections. Mrs. Woods' orchestra was also present, and also provided a programme of music. Afternoon tea was served in the dining room, and Mrs. Moyes, who had charge of this department, with a willing band of volunteers, had a very busy time.
