The fact that Menelaus bad not publicly proved his ability to run out a solid two miles probably caused most punters to disregard him when prospects for the N.Z. Cup came to be reckoned up. Those who go deeper into the game and study breeding were more inclined to give the full brother to Nones more than a. rough chance. By Martian — Lovelorn, his breeding suggests staying, in fact, the whole three place-getters in Miis week's Cup were got by the son of Martagon. It must have been a joyous day for Messrs V. and E. Riddiford when they saw their horses till first and second in the chief two miles Hat race of the Dominion, and reminiscent of Gaulus and The Grafter in the Melbourne Cup ,some years ago. The failure of Client was a shock to most punters, but it was a great "let oil" to the Bar Yons, for the Client—l'orm Up double had been laid to a big figure. The last bit seems to have found a weak spot in the favorite, but 'he looks like winning a good race (it the meeting. The bracketed pair, Menelaus anil johnny Walker, returned their supporters a splendid dividend, which seems to be a leatnre of Messrs Riddil'ord's horses. They are always winning, but at Marlon, Masterton, and Riccarton bearers of the cerise and white cheijuers paid tall prices. Anyway, another Cup has been emptied to the dregs i—perhaps the last for many of us—and most of us are poorer thereby. Monday was a. "royaler" for the layers. Compulsion, winner of the Spring Hurdles, was not, on the published list of acceptors; Kudc's army of backers lost a big cut of their money when Nanna beat her in the Spring Plate, while The White King was practically unknown before he won the Linwood Handicap. The failure of Client, Teka, Slcight-of-Haml, Paraoa, etc., in the big race added to the series of disasters, and Pontoon's second to 80-Peep added insult to injury. Estland's dividend in the .Derby was hardly worth Collecting, but Form lip's Stewards victory relieved the situation somewhat. Devotion, which is hardly an appropriate cognomen for anything connected with racing, got lis on slightly better terms with ourselves when 'she chased Sedd-el-Bahr home in the concluding event, but taking it all in all it was a bad day.
The Avondale meeting saw several hot orders go out. and the defeats of Master Tmii, Glenroy, Toatere, and Vagabond '-hurt" some. Informal paid a microscopic price, but King Chiara caused many to rejoice when he took off the Henderson Handicap in hollow fashion. The meeting will be concluded to-day, when possibly Master Timi and Informal will again be well backed. The Plumpton Handicap, nine furlongs, looks very open, though Taranaki horses lookto hold a strong hand. Mill o' Gowrie and Glenroy are nicely .placed in tlie President's 'Handicap, and All Talk and th" Taranaki elect in the Nihotapu Welter. Derby form makes it look as if Impediment is only a moderate Oaks candidate, and Nanna may carry more monev in to-day's classic event at Bietarton. Vagabond failed on Saturday, -but will see "a short, price in the Avondale i Guineas. ! Judging hv the time (3.25 1-3) there could have been no waiting on the jourI uev in the New Zealand Cup on Monday. Maurice MeCarten was engaged to ride I Johnny Walker in the New Zealand Cup, j and it was hard luck to see his mount just, pipped on the .post by a head. I' Form Up may now be reckoned thebest sprinter in the Dominion. -lie covered the six furlongs in the Stewards' Handicap in hum. 12scc., which is a record for the race. Lingerie is a fast beginner that should pick up a race before she returns from Kiccarton. Client was a firm favorite on Monday, and had every eliance to win, but the light-weights put it all over liim at the finish. The following is a brief account pf the running of the race: Sleight-of-
Hand. Paraoa., and King Star wore showing in front when 1 lio course proper was reached. Passing the stand, Slcight-of-Hand, King Star, and Rorke's Tirift wero just clear of Parana and Client, who were followed by Multifual, Multiply, Sunh. and Hondrn. with Midnight Star and Sir Solo bringing up tile rear. At Cutts's, Rorke's Drift was a length in front of Sleight-of-Hand. who was followed at ail interval of three lengths by King Star, Client, and Paraoa. Running into the back stretch, Client took third place, with Paraoa, Multiply, King Star, Snub, and Multifual handy. Snub improved his position going down. At the six furlongs post he was alongside Client, the pair being followed by Paraoa, Multiply, Johnny Walker, Multifual. and Hendra, with Midnight Star moving up. Running round the turn. .Sleight-of-JTand dropped out, Borko's Drift going, oll from Client, Snub, and Multiply, When fairly in line for home. Teka. Paraoa, and Johnny Walker also joined in. Client and Rorke's Drift were done with below the distance, where Snub. Johnny Walker and Teka were left in charge. Johnny Walker and the other pair settled a hundred yards from home, but. Menelaus came with a fast run and, getting up a few strides from the post, lie beat Johnny Walker by a neck, Snub being three-quarters of a length away, with Teka next, followed by Paraoa, Client. Midnight Star, and Rorke's Drift, the last to finish being Sleight-of-Hand.
