Mr. W. Carey Hill, of Christchurch, wrote as follows to the Press on November 1: The friends and relatives of the late Mr. Alfred Richard Lennon, of New 'Plymouth, will be very much pained when reading the evidence of Mr. C. S. Harper, at the inquest held yesterday, " that lie had had occasion to reprimand him on account of his work not being entirely satisfactory." Having known the late Mr. Lennon for the past twelve years, I have no doubt that any unsatisfactory condition of his work was brought about by over-strain and an ultra-conscientious idea of what was expected from him. I believe that during the many years he has been in the service of his employers he has not had a single holiday. Even during the yearly visit to Chris.tchurch for audit purposes his time was always fully occupied with his work. I have often Warned him for not applying for lenve. His reply was that it was impossible. He did' not even take the usual Saturday half-holi-day. I have always known the late Mr, Lennon as a most conscientious, up. right man, and a cultivated gentleman. I hope that you will insert these few lines to help in some measure to counteract the effect which Mr. Harper's remarks may have on his wife, his daughters, and his friends, , ,
