BIPLANE'S VICTORY.
Australian-N.Z. Cable Association. Sydney, Nov. 5. Cood as was Biplane's time, critics declare that he could ea'sily have bettered it had 'lie desired. The iirst half mile tflok 55 3-Bsec; then pace was clapped on and the second half mile took 5iy 4 sec; the last six furlongs were run in hnin. ISsflc, and the last mile in lmin. 3!)£ sec.
The Herald says: "There was a select and well-conditioned field, but the race was of the one-horse variety. The New Zealand (lying machine took Charge in a few strides, soon opened a clean lead and played with the field all the way, and won with the greatest ease."
The Telegraph says: "At six furlongs Biplane moved away like a of machinery, and. going on, recorded'.a- popular win in the easiest fashion."
New Zealanders, among whom memories of bookmakers on racecourses belong to a past generation, and who think of betting in terms of totalisators, will perhaps be interested in the experiment being made at the A.J.C.'s great Randwick racecourse (writes the Sydney correspondent of the Wellington Post). For the first time the totalisator has been in operation at Kandwiek. The installation cost from £50,000 to £60,000, of which the buildings took £15,000; and the main one is a handsome edifice, with a look of permanence which must be disconcerting to the .bookmakers, who call the odds right alongside. The main totalisator was completed and put into operation for the opening day of the present Spring Meeting, and for the first three days it handled £73,417 —which is considered very satisfactory. The smaller "totes" in the other two enclosures were not ready, and were not In operation. The big "tote" worked smoothly, and the results were all that were hoped for. It has 40 ticket and 50 dividend windows. Inside' of each ticket window is a man and a girl clerk. The man calls the ticket wanted, and the girl vp«i»o an electrical machine, which prints the ticket, cuts it from a roll of paper, ejects it, and adil- '•'••■
total on the horse and the grand total —all with the single pressure of a single key. The Government get 7 per cent, and the club 3 per cent, of the total registered. Naturally, the bookmakers were the severest critics of the machine, but it worked so well that it gave them few opportunities. So far as odds about the horses were concerned, honors were easy. Genemllv. on well-backed horses, the bookmakers gave the better prices, while +!"> machine undoubtedly paid more for the lightly-backed winners. The larger bookmakers, who deal in nothing less' than a £5 note, and usually in hundreds, declared that the machine affected them not one iota, but the small men complained bitterly of decreased business.
