The Midhirst Dairy Company have appointed Mr. Benge manager of the factory. At one period the new manager was employed at the Stratford factory, eo is not a stranger to Taranaki. lie was for 14 years in the Cambridge factory, and is now at Palmerston North. Besides being thoroughly conversant with the butter industry, Mr. Benge has •'done his little bit," having seen active' service at the front, and has also a son In the trenches. Tne ladies controlling the mart and tea-rooms on Saturday, in aid of the V.M.C.A. funds, had a very good day. The exact sum received was not known, but is believed to be over £44. Next week Mrs. Uniaeke has control of the mart and Mrs. Thompson of the tearooms. EoKttions for both will bo very acceptable at any time. At Mr. C. Martin's shop to-day I was shown a sample of buckets made in Christehurch of motor spirit tins. These have been galvanised and looked the real thing, being strong, light and handy. This* opens up a trade for clean tins, so that, probably, instead of the Pa tea j'ivcr being a receptacle for "empties'" it will be scoured to secure those not already beyond redemption. A Maori troupe held the boards at the town hall on Saturday evening, but owing to lack of publicity the patriotic funds for which the entertainment was given would not receive much assistance.
Mr. Burmester, manager of the local branch of the H.B. Clothing Company, to-day received wore! that his son, Sergt. R. JT. Burmester, 13th Reinforcements, liad been badly gassed and wounded. ■Before leaving for the front Sergt. Burmester was for a time on the staff of Messrs Spenee and Stanford, and latter-' ly with Mr. Xewton King's branch here. An elderly man charged with being found drunk on Saturday night, was convicted and discharged at the S.M. Court this morning, Mr. C. D. Sole, J.P., i presiding.
Mr. C. E. James has just opened up some very appropriate and beautiful Christmas cards for sending to soldiers at the front, and friends in the Home Land. A very large and varied assortment is available, but already a steady demand has set in, so those on the lookout for seasonable gifts of this description should lose no time in inspecting Mr James' stock.
