Word was received in Hawera, vestcrday, that W p. Morrissey, formerly of , ! and McCart hy'« office, was wounded and gassed on October 15. Many friends will hope soon to hear of improvement in his condition.

\U regret, to have to reoord the death of Mr. W. Allen, of Frankleigh (Park, which occurred at the New Plymouth Hospital yesterday. Deceased, who was employed on the dredge, has suffered for some time from a strained heart He leaves a widow and nine children to mourn his loss.

Mrs. livery, of Tokaora, has received advice that her son, Private Michael John Lavery, has been killed In action. Deceased was attached to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. The family will have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.
General orderß recently reteived to kcw Zealand contain particulars of honors conferred on New inlanders. Lieut.Colonel D. S. Wylie has been made a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, and his name was also brought under the notice of the Secretary of State for War for distinguished services.
Mr. H. R. Kemp was farewelled on Wednesday last by his fellow-workers m the local Money Order and Savings' Bank. Twelve years ago Mr. Kemp was a member of the New Plymouth telegraph staff, and since then hag been stationed at various times at Napier, Wellington, and Hawera, but has severed .us connection with the public service to join Mr. W. T. Thorpe, of Elthftm.
The death occurred on Thursday ot Mr. James Treanor, ex-senior sergeant of police, at the Auckland District Hospital, where he had been under treatment for a few days. On his reaching the age of 03 years Mf. Treanor retired from the force in February last, and n of late years had. not been too robust.
Air. Daniel Desmond, late of Awahuri, where he had lived for many years, died ill Feilding on Sunday, at the age of 71 years. Mr. Desmond was born at se& on the way out to New Zealand the Old Country and lue whs identified with the Maori wars in Taranaki and Poverty Bay. He was a widower, with no family. The death occurred in Nurse Whiteham's private hospital at Carterton on Saturday of an old resident of Grey, town in the person of Mr. .Tames Phelps The late Mr Phelps, who was born at Wellington some 03 yoars ago, took up land in the Waiohine Gorge about 21 years ago, and had resided there evei since. His wife and five jtonl and a daughter still survive him. '
Rifleman C. R. (Chil) Tarrant, formerly of Patea, whose death in action has been reported, left with the 15th Reinforcements with the 3rd N.Z. Rifle Brigade, afterwards being transferred to the 3rd Light Trench Mortar Battery, He was wounded in the neck at the battle of Messines, but after a short , spell returned to the trenches. At one time the late soldier was employed by tho Hawera and M&nutahl Dairy Companies, but' previous to hia enlistment he was on the Waikato Dairy Company's staff.
The rapidly dwindling list of Taranaki veterans was still further depleted yesterday by the death of Mr Walter Bishop of Fitzroy, at tho ripe age of 86, The deceased gentleman, wljo was born in Dorsetshire, has beeif in New Zealand for the last 70 years, many of which were spent in farming at Tarurutangi. and after retiring from active pursuits, lie settled down at Fitzroy. He was through the Maori war, and he held the New Zealand War Medal, but declined to take the military pension. He wm married 04 years ago to Miss Loveridge, Who is now 81 years of ase. To his widow and 11 sorrowing children, the youngest of whom is 35. the sympathy ot a very large circle of friends is extended.
Th'o' death is announced of Lieut. Robert- Snence, who was reported wounded the other day. It appears from ft cable received by his brothers in Stratford that he was killed three weeks ago. Lieut. Spcnce was in partnership with Mr. J. R. L. Stanford and his brother Sain as barristers and solicitors in Stratford. He served his articles with Mr. J. B. Roy, of New Plymouth, And passed all his examinations with brilliancy. He became one of the most successful court lawyers in Taranaki, and had a future full of promise. Eighteen [months ago he volunteered, and quickly came to the fore and received a commission. He had a happy nature and was ft worthy fellow in eiery way, and his untimely end will fce regretted by a big circle of friends.
Mr, W. H. Haddrell received word yesterday morning from the Minister of Defence that his son, Sydney Herbert Haddrell had been killed in action on October 12. Sydney Haddrell was educated at the Ararat District High School, Malvern, and at the Christehurch Boys' High School. Upon leaving school he served his time with the engineering lirm ol Luke and Co., Wellington, '*ubseqnently joining the railway department at West port, and later nt Diincdin. He left tho railway department to join the Mutual Life "and Citizens' Assurance Company, and was in their employ till he enlisted with the l.itli .Reinforcements. At the front he was attached to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade and was wounded on November 0 1010.
