TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Commencing'with Saturday, sportsmen will have plenty to keep their minds occupied as regards racing. The Avondale meeting opens on that day, and will be concluded on Wednesday; the Canterbury J.C. Metropolitan gathering takes place on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, and the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting on Tuesday. Thursday, and Friday. The racing carnival will be rounded off with the Auckland R.C\ spring meeting at F.llerslie -on Saturday week, after which there

will be no serious disturbances until the end of the month.

The New Zealand Clip, if one can believe Wanganui enthusiasts, 'has already been handed over to Mr. W. Duncan, whose fine 'horse, Client, is in high favor. At one stage of the game Hcndra disputed favoritism with the Fordell crack, but Wellington form has given the public a good lead, and there now appears to be little prospect of anything supplanting Client in favor on the day. Trentham running attracted attention to Paraoa, Teka, and Johnny Walker, while Sleight-of-Hand lias been going great guns at Riecarton. Paraoa ran two magnificent races last week, and must be a greatly improved horse; but it is a. moot point whether lie can stretcli the necks of Client or. Sleight-of-Hand at differences of 141b and 81b respectively.

The Stewards' Handicap bears a very open appearance. Form Up, Gazique, Miss Deval, Elocution, Wrestler, Disdainful, Lingerie, and Moutoa Queen arc all fancied in various quarters, The crowd behind Gazique are particularly sanguine of auccess, and their horse will strip as fit as anything on the day. An exceptionally fine lot of two-year-olds will he produced in the Welcome Stakes. Gloaming, by The WelkinLight, is the hope of Riccarton, but Pontoon (Wolawa—Float), Karo (Demosthenes —K&utuku), Kilalla (Kilbroney— Arai-te-Uru) and others may prove more seasoned. The above quartette are racers de luxe. Small fields will face the starter in the New Zealand Derby and Oaks, Estland looks like striking form in the Derby, while Impediment is well fancied in the fillies' rave.

Three of Fred Tilley's "lads" will have mounts in the New Zealand Cup, Charlie Price rides Client, Maurice McCarten Johnny Walker, and Geo. Young Midnight Star. Hector Gray already tops the winning jockeys' list, and (barring accidents) the riding premiership looks a cake walk. The brood mare Blemish died in Wanganui last .week after foaling a line colt to San Fran. Biplane is reported to be in great fettle, and will start a warm order in the Victorian Derby on Saturday. Wish Wynne is now trained by P. Conway. Informal, by Demosthenes—Formality, who won the Wellesley Stakes in hollow fashion, should paralyse the two-year-olds at Avondale. Cathedral Chimes and Author Dillon appear to have monopolised the betting in the New Zealand TroVting Cup, and both pacers have shown fine form in '•try-outs" at Addington. Last week Author Dillon got over twelve furlongs in 3min. 15 4-ssec., a great 20, Informal was purchased as a yearling for a paltry outlay of 35gns. Another great bargain was Teka, who was sold not long ago for 25gns. There are still bargains in horse-flesh. but very few of the Demosthenes or Kilbroney lireed will be ''given away" at the forthcoming gales,
