BRITISH AT PASSCHENDAELE.
' BAVARIANS SEVERELY CUT CP. FURTHER BRITISH ADVANCE. United ,Service. Received Oct. 31, 8.30 p.m. London, Oct. 30. The 'United Press correspondent states that the Britishers are now on the outskirts of Passchendaele. The Bavarians counter-attacked savagely,, despite the British artillery mowing great gaps in their ranks. Suddenly the machine-guns enfiladed the Bavarians at 800 yards range, and then the Bavarians faltered and stopped, the remnants falling back in disorder as the Canadians pelted them with the maehine-guiis captured at Mecchelle. Meanwhile thn Britishers advanced astride the Lekerbotterbeek, crossed tho almost impassable marshes, and are entering Lekerbotterbeek. VIOLENT ARTILLERY ACTIVITY. Paris, Oct. 30. A French communique says:—There has been violent artillery activity on the right bank of , tho Meuse and an intermittent cannonade on the rest, of the front. AMERICANS AT WORK. New York, Oct. 30. American headquarters in France reports:—Our batteries continue to shell the fiernians at intervals. An American patrol has taken the first German prisoner. GERMAN VERSION. Received Oct. 31, 10 p.m. London. Oct. 30. Wireless German official: The English strongly attacked Passchendaele. Tho village was lost. Vigorous counterattacks near Gheluvelt broke down, with sanguinary losses.
