Mrs. John Vile, senior, who eelebated her hundredth birthday, last May, died on Sunday night, states a press wire from 'Pahiatua. She was a pioneer ot the Wairarapa Bush District, and bad a very interesting career. She lived under sixi British sovereigns. Mrs. Vile came to Wellington in 1856, in the ship Anne Wilson, and resided in Pahiatua many years.
Amongst a recent casualty list in tlia name of Robert Buchele, killed in action on October 18. Before enlisting, Buchele, who was well known in higlewood, worked for Mr. Thos. Drake, and later on with Mr. Frank Drake. Buchele, who left with tho 3rd Reinforoementa, had a varied experience, having served at Gallipoli and Egyjit before going to th» trenches in France.
Mr. J. Harvey, Fitwoy, las received the sad news of the loss of a second «on, Corporal F. C. Harvey, afrtho (rent. For some time past reports ojf'hto neriana illness had been received, arid inquiries elicited that Corporal Harvey had contracted pneumonia while 1-eeotering from an operation for appendicitis performed at Staples, and died on Thursday last. He sailed with the 20th Reinforcements, and up till the time of hi* illness had gone through some very heavy fighting, including that at Messincs, without a scratch. A brother met his death two years ago at the Suvla Bay landing. Deep sympathy will be accorded Mx. and, ! Mrs. Harvey in their sad logs.
