MILITARY SERVICE BOARD.

HAWERA APPEALS. The First Wellington Military Service Board resumed its sittings in Hawera on Wednesday. The following appeals were formally dismissed, appellants having been medically boarded C 2:— John Matthew Joyce, Otakeho; F. Cleaver, Te Roti; P, L. O'Reilly, Stratford; J. M. Smith, Te Popo : C. K. McCutchan, Taliora; M. T. Gilligan, Patea; W. J. Lesswass, Waitotara; J. J. Malone, Riverlea; G.'W. White, Rowan; H. G. Playle, Kakaramea; F. E. Quinn, Eltham. Thomas William Leggatt, farm manager, Hawera (Mr. Welsh) withdrew his application for extension of time. Leave was granted until November 14. The appeal of George John Bristow, motor mechanic, Kaponga, was adjourned until the November sitting. David Michael fiourke, farmer, Manaia (Mr. Welsh) appealed on the ground of public interest and undue hardship. Appellant was supervising a dairy farm (worked by sharcniilkers), and was also working a sheep and cattle farm at Kohi, near Waverley.' His brother Jame3, who was in partnership with appellant, had gone into camp, while another brother, Wjlliam, was serving in France. In addition to supervising the Manaia farm appellant had to do some of the cropping* on the place. Decision was reserved sine die. Charles Oliver, sheep farmer, Kohi, who appealed on the ground of public interest and undue hardship, gave evidence that he held a mixed farm of 508 acres at Kohi. He had two brothers serving in France. Decision was reserved sine die. William Leslie Stuart Tait, chemist's assistant (Mr. F. C. Spratt) applied for extension of leave. The appeal was adjourned until the Deoember sitting. Mr. O'Dea appeared for Charles John Crockett, farmer, Ngaere, who appealed on the ground of public interest. Appellant enlisted some time ago and was rejected; he was later clra-wn in the ballot and classified C2. His farm consisted of 7'o The only help which be obtained was from his wife. He would never have taken up the farm only for the fact that he had been turned down for active service in the first place. It was decided to adjourn the case until the nest sitting. The appeal of George Westfold, dairy farmer, Auroa, was adjourned sine die, I appellant producing proof that he would be 4fJ years of age in April next. Harold Whitcombe, farmer, Otakeho (Mr. Powell) appealed on the ground of public intereat and undue hardship. Appellant was milking 40 cows on 100 acres, and had no assistance. One brother had been killed in France. The Board reserved its decision. William- Edward Jomcs, law clerk, Stratford" (Mr. H. L. Spratt) applied for an extension of leave. Appellant, who was originally medically iboardedl C2, had been since classified CI, The appeal was dismissed, leave being granted until January 14, 1918. The appeal of Cyril Henry Harden, sheep farmer, Nukuhau, was adjourned until the January sitting, appellant having been medically boarded 82. James Edward Sojle, dairy farmer, Hawera, applied for further extension of time to enable him to complete arrangements in regard to leasing his farm. The case was adjourned until the November sitting. Ernest Adolphus Mander, dairy farmer, Cardiff, appealed on the ground of public interest and undue hardship. Appellant stated that he held 74 acres, and was milking 23 cows by hand. He had no labor. He had an excellent herd, and his returns were one of the highest in the district. He appealed because he was doing his duty to the country as a. producer. The appeal was adjourned until the November sitting to enable the Board to make further enquiries into the case. Frank Bridgeman, farmer, Hurimoana, appealed on the ground of public interest and undue hardship. Appellant held a lease of 88 acres in the Hurimoana district in partnership with another reservist, who had been classified C2. The farm was at present stocked with 300 dry sheep. He had one brother in camp. The appeal was dismissed, leave being granted until December 17. Walter Gordon Wilson, sheep farmer, Kohuratahi, who appealed on the ground of public interest and undue hardship, said he occupied a leasehold sheep and cattle farm of !)53 acres. There were 700 breeding ewes on the place. He had no assistance whatever. The case was adjourned until the November sitting, pending the examination of a brother who had been called up for service. Henry Edmund Villeroy Ameys, far-;. mcr, Kaimata, who appealed on the ground of undue hardship, .said that lie was managing his father's farm of 187 acre's, on which there were 300 mixed sheep and 35 head of mixed cattle. There was only his mother, father and himself on the farm. His father was at present in \he hospital. He had had no intention of appealing until his father took ill. Appellant put in a medical certificate as to the illness of his father. Decision was reserved sine die. Walter Blair Roberston, fanner, Waverley, applied for leave to enable him to get through the shearing season. The appeal was dismissed, leave being granted until January 14. Charles Edward Trott, Mata, who said he was farming 160 acres at Mata, applied for leave so as to allow him to get his root crops in. The appeal was dismissed, leave being granted until December 17. | In -respect of the appeal of James ' Hornby, factory manager, Kaupokomii, 'decision was reserved, the case being al- | lowed to stand over until the other factory appeals were dealt with.
