• _ The Otago Universitv candidate for the Rhodes Second-Lieut. John Wilkie Hinton, M.S.C. Mr. S. Spence, of Stratford, has been notified that his brother, Lieutenant R. Spence, of the legal firm of Spence ana Stanford was wounded on October 12. Mrs. Frank Baker, of Frankley Road, lias received word, that her brother, (Private George Hodaon, had died of wounds on October 13. Mr. Thomas Neale, chairman of the Nelson Hospital Board, paid a visit of inspection to the New Plymouth Hospital yesterday seeking ideas in connection with the rebuilding of the Nelson hospital. The Rev. 0. M. Stent, M.A., late Vicar of Opunake, who was nominated for the position of Vicar of St Alban's, Eastbourne, was instituted to the cure of the district on Sundar morning last, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Sprott, Bishop of Wellington, officiating. The church was crowded, and a full choral service was rendered by the choir. After -the institution Mr. Stent took the morning service, and the Bishop preached a very eloquent sermon, touching upon the ministry of the church. At the evening service the church was again crowded, when Mr. Stent preached. The recent death of Mr. Walter Laurie Christie, 1.5.0., at Dunedin, has brought to a close an interesting career. Born at Paisley 75 years ago, he left Home at the age of 18, and after spending some years on various fields he tried his luck i on the goldfields of Otago. When the tall for service against the Maori rebels came, he, like many others, joined the Defence Force, and later the Wanganui ifeoman Cavalry. AVitli a troop from the latter he took part in many actions I in various districts in the North Island; both East and West Coasts. His action in saving the life of Captain Percy at Opotiki, in the Bay of iPlenty, is 'welt remembered by many of his friends. He was engaged in ihe exciting work of despatch carrying between Patei», Wanganui, and Turakina, and some of his experiences of those days were exciting and interesting. He was the first New Zealander to receive the Imperial Service Order for "long and meritorious service." The youngest son, Lieut. H. A. Christie, was killed in action in the battle of Messines on June 2 of this year.
