STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) [All communications, letters, etc., left With Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] TOWN BAND. •Stratford, Oct. 25. At a meeting of members of the town band it was unanimously resolved to appoint Mr. L. Spurdle, of Wanganui, to the position of conductor of the band. There were 10 applicants for the position. In the new conductor the local band should continue to make further progress, as he brings with him considerable experience in musical matters. He is the winner of about 10 medals won in open competition, and was practically the founder of the Wanganui City Band, which is now known as the Queen Alexandra's Own, and of which he is bandmaster. Prior to this he was for some years associated with the Wanganui Garrison Band. In relinquishing the reins a word of commendation is due to Conductor 0!. Ford for the manner in which he has held the band together during the past year or so. With the same unanimity of members -and a lot more imprest by the public, Conductor Spurdle should he able to make Stratford more than proud of its band. GENERAL. The Ngaere ladies, headed by Mesdames Coleman and Walker, obtained very satisfactory results at the patriotic rooms on Saturday. The mart -realised £-23 l - 2s, and tea rooms £7 11. Miss Wilson won the cushion, and Miss Murphy the camisole. Next Saturday the Beaconsfield ladies will run the rooms, and already a good supply of poultry, cakes, etc. is promised. Donations of jams, preserves etc., will also he gladly acknowledged and turned into cash. Sir. J. W. Boon, who has been indisposed during the past few days, is now on the mend again. Owing to the heavy rains during the night, and the damp state of the turf, there were no games on thfe bowling green this afternoon. Arrangements are now being made to hold a baby competition here shortly. The patriotic committee are interesting themselves in the matter, and with the support of the district there is every reason to anticipate that a good sum for the Wounded Soldiers' Fund by this means should be secured.
