EVERYBODY'S THEATRE. ) "INTOLERANCE"—WORLD'S WONDER PICTURE. "Intolerance," D. W. Griffith's colossal spectacle and his first .and only production since "The Birth of a Nation," will he shown for the first time in 'New Plymouth at Everybody's Theatre this (Thursday) evening at 8 ,p.in. and again to-morrow, Friday evening, with a matinee to-morrow, at 2 p.m., under the management of .T. C. Williamson. Ltd. A leading journal wrote of "Intolerance" as follows:—"The purpose of tins offering is to trace a universal theme through various periods of the race's history. Ancient, sacred, mediaeval and modern times are included in its scope. There are four separate stories, each with its own set of characters. The modern story is laid in a Western American city of the present time. It shows the baneful workings of intolerance upon the victims of the so-called uplifters who are financially supported by a self-seeking philanthropist. The thrill of the story does not obscure its plea for personal liberty. The story of the sacred time is laid in Judaea, A.D. 27. Jerusalem is the scene of the intolerance of the Roman law which finds its victim in the Man of Men, the greatest exemplar of tolerance in all ages, who expiates upon the cross the penalty to be paid by "those who do not believe as we believe." In the mediaeval time the scourge of intolerance was sweeping over France, which, after suffering four civil wars within a decade, was the victim of the horror of the massacre of 1372, pcrpe-, trated by Catherine de Medici, the arch exponent of the law "We must destroy or be destroyed." The ancient story depicts the destruction of the greatest civilisation of antiquity—the ' treason growing out of the intolerance of Babylon's high priest of Baal, who, to suppress the growing worship of other gods, betrays his King Belchazzar and opens the gates of the capital to the conquering Cyrus and his mighty hosts. Even this limited resume shows that words cannot give an adequate idea of the massive sweep of this stupendous production. One must see its wonders to have any conception of its mighty thrill and irresistible charm." A matinee will be given to-morrow at two' o'clock when children will be admitted half price, Is and fid.. Seats can now be booked at Collier's for 2s '6d, there being no extra charge for booking.
A FINE PROGRAMME AT THE EM PIRE—"THE TWINKLER"
Inadvertently William Russell gets a chance to do some of the beat acting of his career and some of the finest seen on the screen in "The Twinkler," a fine Mutual feature shown at the Empire last niglit. The title is the nickname of a light fingered thief—a "dip" in police parlance, and the insight into the methods of the underworld is truly wonderful. It is quite genuine that the story was written by a convict—an author who had gone down in the world and was serving sentence for embezzlement-r----and who had unique methods of ascertaining actual facts of the criminal world. The supporting items include a Topical Gazette, a splendid scenic and a humorous comedy. TO-MORROW. There will be a complete change tomorrow when the principal attraction will foe the third episode of the fascinating serial, "The Secret of the Submarine" and a fine five-reel Metro feature, ''The Dawn of Love," in which the popular Mabel Talliaferro is starred.
