LAWN TENNIS.

NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. The annual meeting of the New Plymouth Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club was held at the Soldiers' Club on Saturday night, Dr. Leatham, the club's president, presiding over an attendance of 2f> members. The annua! report stated that the overdraft had been reduced from £O4 (is Od to £64 17s—-a decrease of £2!) !ls 6d. The membership was now as follows: Playing members 69 (ladies 44; men 25); croquet members, 24; honorary members 64 (ladies 52, men 12). This was an increase of 4 playing members and a decrease of 3 honorary members on last year. No tennis competitions were played during the season. The croquet winners were: A grade championship singles and break competition, Miss M. Norman; handicap singles, Mrs. A. Fookes; handicap doubles, Mesdames Curtis and Haseler; B grade champion, ship and break competition, Mrs. Haseler; handicap singles, Mrs. Bowling. In these competitions the entrance fees and prize monfey, amounting to £8 7s, were handed to the British Bed Cross Society. The thankß of the club were again duo to those ladies who so kindly; provided afternoon tea during the season. Mrs. iPenn acted as honorary secretary of the ladies' tennis committee, and Mrs, A. Fookes to the croquet committee. The committee had much pleasure in thanking those ladies. Subscriptions were now payable, and members were askeii to pay promptly, as the club was in need of funds. The committee had to record with deepest regret the untimely death during last season of the late Mr. H. Stocker, who, as member an£ secretary, rendered the club invaluable assistance over a considerable number of years. Also, on active service, Captain N. Arden and Lieutenant D. Harle were added to those of the members who had made the supreme sacrifice. The retiring members of the committee were Messrs E. B. Davies, E. Griffiths, A. B. Ryder, H. R. Bloxam and T. Simpson. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Dr. 11. B. Leatham (re-elected), vice, president, Dr. E. F. Fookes; lion, secretary and treasurer, Mr. C. B. Webster (re-elected); lion auditor, Mr. W. P. Nicoll (re-elected); committee, Messrs J. C. Nicholson, H. B. Bloxam, E. Griffiths, T. Simpson, and H. W. Kirlcby. The secretary stated that a new caretaker had been engaged and had been at work for the past fortnight. The courts were now looking in fine order, and it was anticipated they would be opened at the usual time—early in November. Votes of thanks were passed to the ladies who had provided tea, and to the press, and a similar compliment to the chair concluded the meeting.
