NEW HOSPITAL FOR HAWERA.

. The Hawera Hospital Board on Thursday moraine held a conference with the local contributing bodies to discuss the best means of raising the money for carrying out the proposed additions to the hospital, costing approximately £50,000. Mr. G. W. Taylor (chairman of the Board) presided. The following represented the contributing bodies— Messrs Dixon, Bone,"Tarrant, Murdoch, White, jßelcher, Craigi, Tayler, Pease, Dunlop and Bridge. The chairman laid before the conference the following esftimate'B of thl works to be carried out nuder a comprehensive scheme, over -a period of years, which had been prepared by the Board's architects, Messrs 'Duffill and Gibson:— First step: Complete purses' home, '£5000; infectious disease ward (part), £■1000; annexe women's ward, £600.; furnishing, £1500; total. £ll,lOO. Second step: Maternity ward, £0000; laundry. £2000; kitchen and staff' block, £4500; new male,ward. £4000; total; £10,500. Third step: Complete infectious ward, £3000; new female ward, £4000; additions to children's ward, £2000 ; consumptive wards, £3000; total, £12,000. Fourth step': Administrative block, £4000; demolish and re-erect present wooden wards to new plan, £7000; total, £11,000; approximate grand total, £50,500. In addition a morgue would have to be provided for at an approximate cost of £SOO. When complete the buildings would have to be furnished at an approximate cost of £4500. Mr. Marx moved that steps be taken to raise temporarily a sum of £IO,OOO on the property in order to carry out the first step of the comprehensive plan, including t'he maternity ward. Seconded by Mr. J. B. Murdoch and carried. At a meeting of the Board in the afternoon it was resolved that a deputation should wait upon the Minister in regard, to the best means of financing the scheme and also to ascertain his opinion in reference to removing the hospital to another site.
