Vigorous preparations are (says the Patea Press) at present being made for the extension of the western wall in connection with the breakwater extension contract. Already some five large caissions have been manufactured and are now seasoning, whilst a sixth block is in course of manufacture. The giant crane for the western aide, a fellow one to that already in use on the eastern side, is now practically completed, and will be used in transporting the caissons to their destination. The value of the work of raising the walls is to be seen in the deep channel between the -western wall and the guide pier. In place of the old shallow basin between the walls there is now a good channel and a particularly fine sandy beach, large enough for a game of cricket at low water. There is ample evidence that hundreds of thousands of tons of sand have been prevented from entering the river since the walls were raised. With the extension work carried out, and the scouring of the river thus assisted, there should be a splendid depth of water at all tides. As it is, thanks to the work already accomplished, the river has never been in, a better state for Shipping. In spite of the drain on the manhood of the country consequent upon the war there are still a goodly number of men employed on the works, the various workshops presenting a very busy spectacle, working as they are at high pressure, the contractor and staff taking full advantage of the fine weather that is at present being enjoyed.
