DESERTER ARRESTED.
IN THE FAR NORTH. . Francis Carroll, one of the three Carroll brothers, of the Manawatu district, who were called up last June but who subsequently disappeared, was arrested on October !), at Awanui, Kaitaia, in the extreme north of the Auckland province. He had taken an assumed name, and was passing himself off as an American citizen. The arrest was made by Constable Martin, of Kaitaia. Carroll was brought through to Palmerston North on Tuesday morning and handed over to the military authorities, by whom he will be dealt with. The case of the Carroll brothers attracted more than usual attention some months ago, ou account of the defiant attitude taken up by them when before the Appeal Board. Two were ordered into camp and another was given leave for a month or so. The first two disappeared, and the remaining brother was then ordered into camp, but prior to the date, of his taking up military training, he, too, left for parts unknown. The arrest just made is the first that has been beard of the absentees since their disappearance.
