BOWLING.

OPENING OF NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. At the opening of the New Plymouth Club's green yesterday there was a large attendance, including 40 visiting players and a large quota of ladies and friends. A slight shower made the gTeen a little heavy, but did not seriously handicap the afternoon's play. The president, Mr. W. F. Brooking, in opening the season's play, extended a welcome to the ladies, visiting players, and friends. He spoke of the enthusiastic manner in which members of the committee, and especially the green warden (Mr. W. L. Luseombe), had tended the green, getting it into very good order, and carried out many important Improvements. He alluded to the two feet on the mat rule and other matters, concluding bv wishing one and aU a prosperous and successful season. He then asked Mrs. Jiimes Morey to throw the jack, a performance that elicited cheers. Afternoon tea wag provided by the president, and was dispensed by Mesdames Morey and Fookes and other ladies present. The customary match, President v. The President's team therefore won the afternoon's play by a margin of 16 points. STRATFORD CLUB'S OPENING. The season was opened at Stratford in ideal weather, a light breeze tempering the summer sun. The green was in excellent order, and in advance of the anticipations of the visitors, who hailed from Hawera, Opunake, Pihanfa, Netf Plymouth, and Eltham. In his opening speech the president (Mr. J. W. McMillan) maintained that an afternoon at the pastime was an excellent tonic to the worries and trials of the war. He mentioned having received apologies from Messrs W. A. Parkinson and Curtis, of Hawera, and good wishes from the New Plymouth and Fitzroy dubs. He then called on the Mayoress to throw the jack, and, afte rthe singing of the National Anthem, declared the 1917 season open. The pleasure of the afternoon was enhanced by the excellent graphophone selections provided by the Mayor, and the generous hospitality dispensed by the ladies. Seven full rinks were engaged in a competition, President v. Vice-President. This resulted in a rather easy win for the President's rinks, who scored 167 against 112 by the VicePresident's.
