TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa"). Wellington races on Saturday. All roads lead to Waverley on Monday. Form Up is up to 'his best form at present. Salutary was lame after racing at Masterton. Desert Gold has 10.5 in the Stewards' Handicap, but she can carry it. No matter what distance they race Hushabye over, the last furlong finds her out. Or. 2 Wanganui punter put £SO on Monlu last week, but he got a bad run for his money. The way they run the jockeys' board at country meetings is a perfect disgrace, and Masterton was no better. Antwerp, who was fired and turned out some time ago, looks like standing another preparation. The Kilbroney "cracks" in the south, and the Demosthenes demons in the north appear to be unbeatable this season.

Masterton is alleged to be a "dry" district, but there were plenty of drunks at the races, and a team of expectant "dead beats" buns around the ears in case a hooze might come their way. Such is prohibition. Maurice McCarten is the most promising lightweight seen out so far this season, and he rode two headv races on Arrowfield and Ancre on Friday. •' When the weights appeared for the second dav at Masterton evervbody rushed Crowhurst in "doubles.' 1 but Lady Louisa was not thought off as a second leg. and the Bar Vons scored again. The mud at Masterton was sot the

ordinary class of mud, but a slippery, slimy, pea-soup variety that oozed into your boots, and decorated your panfa almost up to the knee. It has been estimated that on Thursday last punters carried away several tons of mud on their persons, and when you add to this discomfort a deluge of rain and an almost general slaughter of favorites, you can imagine what a jrreat day it was. The management of the totalisator at Masterton was far from perfect. Horses that were scratched were backed on the rrfe.chirtc on more than one occasion, but where the holders of tickets on these horses complained to the secretary, the latter official courteously and promptly refunded the investments. One punter told me that he had a pound on Rewa Rewa. and when I told him that the nag was still in Wanganui lie nearly threw a back-flip. Makes vou laugh; doesn't it? Client was produced on the first day -at Masterton.'but he was in a perfect lather before the start, and the best he could do was to run fourth.

Sleight of Hand is goinsr on splendidlv, and is taken south on Wednesday. He is an unlikely starter at Wellington, but at Rieearton—well, what do you think t

Gray got a bad spill off The Golfer last week, but an exhaustive inquiry failed to explain how 'the mishap oc curred.

Disdainful made no race of the August Handicap at the National meeting, and with 2filba off her hack she cannot he said to hp badly treated in the C.J.C. Stewards' Handicap. Form Up carried his 9.13 at Masterton like a race horse, and he looks likelv to run well at the C.J.C. Metropolitan meeting ne\'t month. Astrophel was hacked for pounds, shillings and pence in the last race at Masterton, hut a rise of 121bs caused her to tire over the last furlong. Old Awnhou managed to win a couple of races for his southern owner at Dune--din, and now that he has struck form lie may prove a cheap horse.

Merrie Poto is one of the nicest movers you could set eyes upon, and it is a wonder he was not entered for the Stewards' Handicap. ' "The Whip," being shown at Everybody's, is a picture that should be seen by all sportsmen. The splendid American racing and hunting scenes are worth going a long way to see, the photography being superb. "Moturoa" does not often tout for picture shows, but the sporting atmosphere of "The Whip" attracted him, and the horses (races, trotters, hunters, brood mares and foals), and the views of the racecourse, training tracks and hunting country, and the old, fat Bar Von. who turned out trumps in the end, were "great." No sportsman should miss this treat.
