HORSE-WHIPPED BY INDIGNANT RETURNED SOLDIER. By Telegraph.—'Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Rev. Howard Elliott was assaulted outside his residence this evening, in connection with which a returned soldier, Christopher Charles Clements, of Remnera, and his brother-in-law, Herbert Eugene McEntce, have been arrested. In a statement to the Herald, Clements said that on returning to Now Zealand recently, he had learned that Elliott h»d made statements about his late sister, a nun. who was drowned at Taumaninui over a year ago. He said he had decided to thrash Elliott, and, armed with a cowhide horsewhip, had waited for Elliott. Elliott was struck on the side of the head and face.

The accused were liberated on bail„and appear in the iPolice Court in the morning, when, it i* understood, they ,will ask for a remand.
