M an indication of what some piecework men were earning at the flax industry at the present time, a business man stated to-day that he }(ad seen the time sheet of one workman, who received £2l for a fortnight's work. The Age says: ' In Masterton it is impossible to secure an empty house. One resident, who had the house he was renting sold over his head, has for the past month offered a bonus to the person securing him 1 a five or six-roomed house, but without success. It is stated that landlords are demanding a signed agreement when letting a house that the tenant will vacate it at a month's notice. The tenant has no choice in Masterton.
It is stated that the alteration of electoral boundaries in Central Otago is likely to have a marked effect on trade. The inclusion of a large portion of Central Otago in Tuapeka, which is a "dry" area, will (says the Dunedin Star) have the result of placing seven or eight hotels iu a No-license district. There are, for example, two at Middlemarch, one at Clarks, one at the Beaum'ont, one at Rae's Junction, and two at Outram. That appears to be the position at present'; but in view of the fact that the new electorate of Tuapeka is a composite area, there will probably be a keen demand for remion. A fine new programme was promised at the Empire last night and the crowd in attendance were in no way disappointed with the two splendid star 'films screened. Viola Dana was splendid in the powerful Metro drama "Threads of Fate" and Violet Mersereau quaintly delightful in the Blue-bird feature "Susan's Qentleman." Summed up, it was two brilliant little ladies and two brilliant photoplays. The same programme is showing to-night for the last time.
A schedule placed in the hands of the Official Assignee, Auckland, last week, by Thomas Sutton, a bankrupt carpenter of New Plymouth, and laterof Whan■garei, assesses his liabilities as £142 12s 6d, due to unsecured creditors, and £137 lis covered by charges over contract moneys. His assets he states to be: From tools of trade £ls, cash in hand Bs, and property £150; total, £lB5 Bs. In his statement, as to the causes of his failure, bankrupt says that owing to his wife'n ill-health he was compelled to sacrifice his business in iPalmerston North, and bought a farm at Awakino Point for £3OO, but owing to floods and the relapse of his wife he had to sell out at £llO loss. Going to Whangarei, he purchased a house for £BOO, but no work offered for many weeks. Finally his tender was accepted for the erection of a cottage, but owing to the local strike he could not easily get material, and had to apply to Auckland at increased cost. Meanwhile his creditors, pressing for payment, compelled him to seek the protection of the Court. The first gathering of creditors has been fixed for the afternoon of Thursday next October 18.
The residents of New Plymouth will no doubt welcome the reappearance of a J. C. Williamson Ltd., attraction in this town for since the destruction of thetold Theatre Royal there has been no piece staged. However, the firm has entered into the picture business, dealing, naturally, in things in a big way such as the public look to them to do: hence it is not surprising to find that they will send here t). W. Griffith's colossal spectacle 'lntolerance." This remarkable picturea sun pla*4ft the ages it has been called —will be shown here on the 25th and 26th inst. at Everybody's. J. C. Williamson Ltd., in their effort to provide the public with the best, oven in these towns, are sending here their own special machines, operators, orchestra—for special grand opera music was written for "Intolerance"—and staff so that residents here will see "Intolerance" in as complete a manner as did the cities. Mr. Duncan Neven, the firm's touring manager, is in Now Plymouth making necessary arrangements.
