ORIGINAL VERSE.
THE SILENT ARMY. * Them's a silent army fighting in "Old England," One who's deeds are never jlazoned to ihn world, That's been fighting on with grim determination Since o'er the earth this bloody war was hurled. Men are dying in their thousands for 'their country, In the air, upon the land, and on the sea, That the future which is dawning there, before us May for all be filled with bright pros- ■ perity. So the sweethearts, wives and mothers of Old England . Are fighting on in silence, day and night, With a firm and steadfast purpose as their duty ' That come what will they'll keep the home fires bright. From the mansion, from the city, from the country, In- the slums, or wherever they may be These women of Old England fight in earnest, That their children may have perfect liberty. And its always been the same throughout the ages, That when'er the British flag has been nnfurled The women of Old England prove in silence "That the hand which rocks the cradle rules the world." —HJ.E., Koru.
