THE LATE SULTAN OF EGYPT.
The late Sultan of Egypt was born in 1854, the son of the Khedive Ismail Pasha. He became Sultan on December 19, 1914; he married the present Sultan:; | (second marriage) on December 23, 188G Hussein Kamil Pasha was the eight! ruler of the dynasty of Muhaimned Ali. appointed Governor of Egypt in 180'). who ntade himself, in 1811, absolute master of the country by force of arms The position of the Sifftan's father. Ismail I—forced to abdicate, under pressure of the British and French Governments, in 1879 —was recognised by 'the Imperial Hatti-Sheriff of February 13, 1841, issued under the guarantee of the five great European Povrers, which established the hereditary succession to the throne of Egypt under the same rules and regulations as those to *e throne of Turkey. The title given to Muhammad Ali and his immediate successors was the Turkish one of "Vali," or Viceroy; but this was changed by an Im 1 - perial firman of .Tune 12. 1867, into tho Persian-Arabic of "Khidewi-Misr." or, as more commonly called, Khedive. By a firman of June 12, 1860, the succession to tfle throne of F,gypt was made direct from father to son, instead of descending after the Turkish law to the eldest heir; and in 1873 the tribute was fixed at £692,350 (sterling). By a firman issued June 8, 1873, the Sultan of Turkey granted to Ismail I the rights hitherto withheld of concluding commercial treaties with foreign Powers, and of maintaining armies. On December IS. 1914, a British Protectorate over Egypt was declared, and on the day the following Proclamation was issued:—"His Britannic Majesty's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs gives notice that, in view of the action' of His Highness Abbas Hilmi Pasha, lately Khedive of Egypt, who has adhered to the King's enemies, His Majesty's Government have seen fit to depose him from the Khediviate, and that high dignity has been offered, with the title of Sultan of Egypt, to His Highness Prince Hussein Kamil Pasha, eldest living Prince of the family of Muhammad Ali. and has been accepted by him. The British Protectorate has been recognised by France."
The heir to the throne is Prince Ka itnil-ed-Din, who was bom in 1875,
