(By "Moturoa") Dunedin races to-day. Concluding day at Masterton. Avon Park is well in at Waverley, ■Fiery Cross should run prominently at Dunedin. Hendra, Client, Egypt, and Sleight-of-Hand are New Zealand Cup favorites. Paraoa, the sole Taranaki representative, occupies any old place in the opinion of pickers. It would take all of 9.9 to stop Toatere at Waverley, but he will probably be reserved for Auckland. The last time Tip Up raced at Dunedin lie was returned a winner, and he may show up there again this week. On nominations only the Bar Vons have made Gazique, Form Up, Desert Gold, Croesus, Lingerie, Hymestra, and Disdainful favorite for the C.J.C. Stewards' Handicap. i The effect of war on racing! A jock- < ster, politely requested to "take hold of" his mount, replied: "No blanky fear, boss. I'm a conscientious objector!" If all they say of Gipsy Gem is correct she should run well in the sprints at, Waverley. The chestnut daughter., of St. Paul is reported to ha v.; got over her dislike for the barrier, and there is no doubt about her pace. ' j« Taringamutu's lialf-Mster, Kilalla, by . Kilbroncv—Arai te Uru, showed wonder- ; fill gameness when she won the Trial at . Kurow last week, and her appearance in the McLean Stakes at Dunedin will be •keenly noted. Agnestes and Dood have arrived in 'Stralia. They will have to find a very weak lot before they punt on Dood. A one-eyed stable attendant, who was being chaffed by his mates for being , turned down by the Medical Board, ■ asked, ' What use would I be in camp, anyhow?" "You'd be the ideal chap for r peeling 1 onions," came a, sharp rejoinder, "for you've only go,t one eye to 'water,' while we would be' 'streaming' at two eyes." Although the Masterton Cup carried with it 240 sovs. in stakes, no penalty is earned by a New Zealand Cup candidate who gins. The stakes are cut up into £145 for first, £<ls for second, and > £3O for third, thus just missing the 150 sovs. to which a penalty is attached. 3 H. Goldllneh, who was "resting," was booked to ride Cardrona and Princess r Bee at the Masterton meeting. Of the forty-eight horses nominated tr,r the New Zealand Cup thirty-three , remain in after the lirst acceptance, Oi those no, loss than twenty-four hail from ■ the North Island. ) _
