MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

BREACHES OF BYE-LAWS. At a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. A. Crooke, S.M., Jolm G. Moffett was charged with having ridden a motor cycle at an excessive rate of speed, between 20 and 25 miles an hour, in 'Devon Street, on September 9. Accused pleaded guilty. Evidence was given by Constable Fitzgibbon along the same lines lines as was given at the inquest on the death of Mrs. Hill. A fine of £l, with costs 17s, was imposed. Harry Linn and Bert Andrews were charged with having driven motor cars without proper tail-lights. Fines of 5s and costs 7s were imposed in each case. Burford Alfred Norman and Vincent Riley were each fined 10s and costs 7s for having carried persons on their motor cycles otherwise than in side-cars, contrary to the borough by-laws. •FAILING TO ATTEND DRILL. E. R, Easthope and B. IS. F. Land were charged with having failed to attend drill, and fines of 10s and costs 7s were imposed. E. E. Jury appeared on a similar charge. Sergeant-Major Hunt said that thi3 last was a case that could very well be made an example of. The defendant had consistently evaded his responsibilities. He had not registered under the Defence Act of 1009 until a year ago, and had not attended one drill since. A fine of 30s and costs 7s was imposed in this case. C. K. Culpitt, who appeared on a similar charge, stated that he had been for some time in the hospital, and had been told that he need not attend drills till notified by Dr. Wade. Sergt.-Major Hunt said 110 notification to that- effect had been received. The case was held over for a fortnight in order to allow the defendant to produce documentary evidence in support of his defence.
