ROYAL LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY.
A meeting of the Taranaki head centre of the Royal Life-saving Society was held in the Soldiers' Club last night. Present,- Mr. D. J. Hughes (chairman), Misses K. White and .T. M. Isaacs, and Messrs N. A. Christensen, P. A. Schwartz find Chas. Bryant, of the N.Z.A.S.A., Christchurch. CORRESPONDENCE. With reference to affiliation, the secretary of the Canterbury Surf and Lifesaving Association wrote, stating that copies of rules and regulations would be sent as soon as they were available. Letters were received from Mr. J. M. McDonald (Mokau), Mr. J. Lang (Waitara), and M.C.C. Bright (Ing)ewood), accepting the positions of honorary representatives in their respective districts. SWIMMING IN SCHOOLS. The sub-committee appointed to draw up conditions for the schools' competition recommended: (1) That two competitions should be held, one for primary schools for pupils under 14, and one for secondard schools, for pupils under 17, both competitions to be open to boys R.nd girls. After some discussion it was decided to raise the age limit of the secondary schools' competition to 18. (2) That two silver cups should be provided for each competition. (3) That silver medals should be provided for the members and instructors of the winning teams. (4) That competing teams consist of at least two members and an instructor. (5) That the tests for the schools' competition should be the same as for the society's elementary and proficiency certificates for the primary and secondary competitions respectively. (0) That entries should close with the hon. secretary on December 20, and the competitions should be held in February. (7) That one or more examiners be appointed, and that the tests be conducted in the nearest suitable place to the schools which entered the teams, and that the final examinations between the three leading teams be held in New Plymouth. (8) That it be a suggestion to the competing schools that the members compete at the same time for the society's elementary and proficiency certificates, and the instructor qualify for the teacher's certificate, as the same conditions apply to both tests'. The recommendations were adopted. It was decided that certificates be given free. Arrangements were made to group the ■ country schools, in order that the visiting instructors could get through the work expeditiously.
