AN INCIDENT Of A STORM. COAL HUUv ADRIFT IN HARBOR. Wellington. Oct. 8.
Considerable excitement was caused on the \\ ellingtun waterfront on Saturday afternoon, when a coal hulk was nearly driven ashore at Oriental Bay by the gale.
At about 5 p.m., when the hulk Cornmandel had finished coaling tho Rteamor Wimmera at No. 1 (north) Queen's Wharf, tlio harbor tux Karaka. was >;<■- cured alongside the hulk, ready (o tow her to her berth .at No. 4 Queen's Wharf. The hulk was tied with two'linos to the wharf. In the business of letting go' the lines one line '.van cast off, and ail unauthorised person let go the second line at the same time. There was a pale of wind Mowing, "and the hulk, which was litl'ht. was.carried towards Oriental Bay. The Karaka, a powerful little boat, quite capable of her work in ordinary circumstances, tried to pull the hulk up, but could not do so, and although one of tho anchors of the hulk was down, the wind was the, master of the situation. When the elements of trouble were seen by the watchers on the wharf, it was ordered that the tug Admiral be pot under way. The crew was not on d'-iv. and the .sear was locked awav. Bui thor.e difficulties were, soon overcome. This locks were broken open, and a crew wa,s feathered. Two engineers on the Wimmera were called to the engine-room of tho Admiral; the deck hands comprised a stevedore, a newsvendor. a boatman, an office clerk, and the purser on the Wimmera. The fireinftn was a boatman on the harbormaster's stall'. Besides this willing crew, the vessel needed a master, and Mr. T. Farev, watch foreman on the harbormaster's staff, filled that position, and in about thirty minutes the Admiral had left the wharf. By the time the drifting vessel had been secured by the Admiral she was about 20 yards off the beach at the far side of the swimming baths. When the hulk was in tow the Janie Reddon came to render assist mice, but was not needed. On the hulk were the. keeper, his, wife and children, and six or seven coalworkers. The i undent could very easily have been attended with a serious ending, and the work of catching the vessel in time was spoken of highly on the waterfront. —Dominion.
