SENTENCE FOR. CARGO BROACHING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Oct. 2 Pour firemen on an overseas steamer were sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment in the Police Court this morning on charges of stealing thirty clocks and thirty pairs of scissors from the cargo of the vessel. Chief Detective Boddnm said agents for overseas vessels had repeatedly reported these thefts and asked for the maximum penalty as a deterrent. FATALITY AT A FIRE. Wellington, Oct. 1. At the inquest on the body of Hugh McCafl'erey, who snccumhcd on September 20 to burns received at a tire at Fox's boardinghouse on September 19, the coroner returned a verdict that death was caused by hypotatic pneumonia, due to burns received in a fire, the man being at the time in a state of intoxication. THE WAIRUNA INQUIRY. Auckland, Oct. 1. After opening the Crown case in the Wairuna inquiry, Mr. Mays said he had some important disclosures to make to the court and, after he had conferred with the magistrate privately ._ the inquiry was adjourned until 2 p.m.
