LIQUOR REFERENDUM.

CABINET CANNOT AGREE. The Parliamentary correspondent of the Manawatu Times says: Following upon the declarations of the National Government leaders that the licensing issues ought speedily to be put to the vote of the people, a Bill came before Cabinet for discussion. It proposed a plebiscite upon the issues: National prohibition with compensation. Continuance. State control.

Several discussions have taken place in Cabinet upon the measure-;, but the net result appears to be that such a hopeless diversity of opinion exists amongst Ministers that there is hardly anv likelihood of the measure coming down this session. Further consideration may result in an agreement on a : modified proposal, but at present those who declare that in view of itr. heavy commitments in excess of the estimates for tue current year the Government cannot face further dislocation of revenue, have carried their point.
